The unfortunate truth is that we live in a world where it seems like not a day goes by that there isn’t some news story about identity theft, fraud, hacking, or a major data breach.

There are lots of bad actors out there who are looking to get their hands on your information and your money. Every time you go online, use a WIFI hotspot, or swipe your credit card you are putting yourself at risk and making yourself a target for these individuals.

This means that as a consumer one of the smartest things that you can do for your overall financial health and wellbeing is make sure that your important financial information is protected.

If you don’t want to be the next victim take the time to review this list of important steps that you can take each day to keep both your money and your identity safe.

• Always guard your credit card.

• If you get a new card in the mail sign your card as soon as you receive it.

• If you’re going to be away from home for an extended period, have your mail held at the post office or get a PO Box, so that it does not pile up.
• Never write your PIN code on your card or keep it in your wallet.

• Always use a bank or a credit merchant that you both know and trust.

• Be very cautious when you use your credit/debit card in public.

• Keep your account number(s) private by not letting anyone see them.

• Shred all bank statements and financial documents.

• Keep your phone and computer safe by installing security features and using unique passwords.

• Don’t give out your account number to anyone over the phone.

• Never respond to any e-mail that asks for your account number.

• If you move, notify all companies you do business with of your new address to ensure that your billing statements will be sent to your new address.

• Always save your receipts to verify that charges are accurate.

• Review your billing statements at least once a month to make sure there are no unauthorized charges.

• Keep all your important financial documents like tax returns, social security cards, etc. in a safe and secure location.

• Be sure to keep track of your checkbook.

• When shopping online only use trusted and verified merchants.
